Southbroom Golf Club, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa - One of the finest holiday golf courses to be found anywhere.

THE SOUTHBROOM AMATEUR CLASSICS

The ongoing success of the Men's Amateur Classic, which began under the guidance of Hugh Purtell in 1991, led to the inaugural Ladies Amateur Classic in 2004. Golfers come from far and wide to participate in the better-ball stableford formats with the men's tournament being played over 4 days and the ladies' over 3. The fields fill up early in the year and booking is essential.

It was a week full of interesting golf, much rivalry, betting and long stories in the bar, finished off by great food and camaraderie.

180 players from all over the country participated and it was good to see many familiar faces returning year after year! There were also quite a few first timers and it seemed as if everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves - the howls of anguish on the course are quickly forgotten with the help of a few drinks with mates afterwards! Players are already putting their names down for next year!

Once again Hibiscus Insurance was the umbrella sponsor so a huge appreciative thank you to Barry Elliot. Hibiscus Insurance has been our main sponsor for many years now and are the backbone of the popular event along with this years other sponsors Nedbank,  Estuary Country Hotel & Spa (Gavin Sole), Applied Outsourcing (Colin McKay), Windhoek / Brandhouse and S.A. Breweries.

The course was in fantastic condition and thanks to Rob & his staff for presenting it so well despite the 'drought'. The sprinkling of rain a few days prior to the tournament certainly helped.

The greens were excellent with some interesting flags making for exciting golf and, with the weather so good and handicaps still high (thanks to the old system), the course had little defense which brought on the 50+ pointers and a winning score of 188 points -  11 ahead of the 2009 winners.

What a fantastic finish to the tournament. After the 3rd round, the father & son-in-law team of Roel Germs ( our recently-turned-80 Club President) and Derek Chambers were leading but they were pipped into 2nd place by one point on the final day by the winning team of Grant Richards & Rob Dye.

We thank sponsors and players for their support of the tournament and, if not before, we look forward to seeing you all again in the 2011 Southbroom Amateur Classic.

On Sunday, Lorrain Ebedes & Helen Kirstein together with Ronel Broodryk & Sophia Whitehead got off to a sizzling start posting 49 points in better-ball stableford.

Monday's honours went to Annette Lawson & Ina Sanders on 48 points.

Tuesday brought in two pairs on 49 points: Margaret Tanner & Jean Mills as well as locals Margaret Sherratt & Sandi Luus.

The winning overall score of 139 points was 9 ahead of the 2010 total - a clear indication of the effects of the 'new' handicapping system.

The evenings were 'party time' and Sunday night included the now 'famous' Southbroom Dance Troupe ably assisted by 'Broer Jan (player 23)' and a Fashion Show of willing members strutting the latest in golf attire. 'Tiger Woods' also put in a brief (if not provocative?) appearance: Sex addict? Yeah? Right! Sure! Me too! You'll have to take a look at the pics . . .

It was light hearted fun with a great meal, good singing and plenty of dancing rounding off an enjoyable evening.

The entertainment on Monday evening was provided by a one-man-band who kept the dance floor rocking the night away.

Southbroom did itself proud yet again thanks to the hard work of the committee, members, staff, and the generosity of the tournament sponsors. Special mention must be made of the catering throughout the tournament - Natalie and her team excelled themselves and certainly received the biggest round of applause at prize-giving. Sincere thanks to you all.

We thank all players for their support, especially those who travelled long distances.  If not before, we look forward to seeing you all again in The 2011 Ladies Classic.  For a few fond memories, click to see the pics!.
