Wrap Up by Dane Adendorff

Last weekend, the 10th & 11th of October, Southbroom Golf Club hosted their 13th Annual Mixed Classic.

Eager teams from all over descended on Southbroom to have their shot at glory, with many locals entering too. Everybody teed off at 12 noon in a shotgun start, and the players couldn’t have asked for better conditions. Andre and his team from Mark Wiltshire Golf had the course in superb condition and the weather was superb, overcast with little to no wind.

The par 4 13th hole had to be shortened for the weekend as there had been a municipal water leak nearby. This created some serious excitement on the day. Lots of birdies and a few eagles. Gerald and Aurette Boardman had a very exciting few holes too. Gerald holed out for an ace on the 13th hole, and on the following 14th par 3, Aurette hit the flag in pursuit of her very own ace. Unfortunately for her, the ball hit the flag, dropped straight down and stopped a few inches in front of the hole. She did happily tap in for her birdie!

With near perfect conditions, the scoring was going to be fierce. After day 1, Ricky & Shelley Sykes had put together a wonderful 46 points and were sitting comfortably in 3rd position. The shared leaders were both two points ahead. Mike Algie & Megan Smith and Jacques & Alet Minnaar both scored an incredible 48 points to set their tournaments up nicely for a shot at the title!

Sunday arrived, and with it came the north-easter. Just enough wind to keep you concentrated. Jacques & Alet consolidated their brilliant first day with a tidy 41 points, finishing 3rd overall on a count out and just 1 point off the eventual winners. Rory O’Donnell & Colleen Anderson shot their way up the leaderboard with a best of the day 46 points, finishing in second spot, also one point off the winners. Mike Algie & Megan Smith, Southbroom locals and first-time Mixed Classic entrants, proved too good. After an incredible Saturday showing, they consolidated for a solid final day showing of 42 points, bringing their final tally to 90 points and winning the Mixed Classic by a point.
