This past weekend Southbroom Golf Club hosted its 21st Southbroom Ladies Classic. 21 years of Ladies coming from all over South Africa to compete and have a great breakaway from the cold of the rest of the country. The theme this year was “Coming of Age with Spritz & Sparkle” and the ladies didn’t hold back.
Prior to the Saturday registration & tournament start we hosted a wine walk, the ladies rambled through the Frederika reserve to the tennis courts, enjoying Southbroom and its natural beauty, with many already dressed for the occasion. Thanks to Boschendal for their sponsorship.
With a shortened format this year, (54 down to 36 holes.) scoring was going to be fierce and ensured we would end with a photo finish. There’s an old saying in golf that says you can’t win a tournament in the first round, but you can certainly lose it! A few teams took that saying to heart and made sure they were in the running to lift the trophy after the first round. Local Ladies, Vash Pillay, Jenny Brewis, Sandy FitzGerald & Jean Cole all had very solid days, closing out with 41 points each. 2 points ahead of them with 43 points were Anneli Botha & Cindy Merrington sitting in second spot. Allyson Thomas & Shirley Jeffery got off to an absolute flyer, holding off Anneli & Cindy with a brilliant 45 points, ensuring a 2 point lead going into the final 18 holes.
A warm Berg wind blew through Southbroom on Sunday evening, and as the sun rose on Monday morning it disappeared and everyone was treated to an absolute peach of a day. With the course in phenomenal condition and no win to speak of, the scoring again was expected to be very tight. The greens were running true, Thanks to Greenkeeper Andre and his MWG Team always presenting the course at its best!
Louise Leal, Precious Solgevik, Belinda Dass & Minah Sinlane-Blom all fired exceptional 43 pointers to fire their way up the leader board, finishing on 82 & 81 points, earning them 3rd and 4th places respectively. The day however belonged to the two leading teams on the first day. Leaders Allyson and Shirley shot a respectable 38 points to finish on 83 points for the tournament. Anneli and Cindy needed to beat Allyson and Shirley by at least three points to claim the title and did just that! A very composed 41 points saw them finish with 84 points overall and claim the trophy by a single point. A massive congratulations to the winners Anneli and Cindy, and to all the other participants for making it such a memorable tournament.
Entertainment over the event
Thanks to singer Colette Bailey on Saturday Night! Studio 8 Dance School for their Burlesque numbers. These talented ladies were also the models together with Derek, Dane & Nic leading the 2026 Pro Shop Fashion show.
James Carlsen & the Gentry Band got everyone dancing on Sunday Evening.
