Wrap Up by Dane Adendorff
Last week we hosted the 36th Southbroom Men’s Classic. 164 eager golfers travelled from all over South Africa to sunny Southbroom for 4 rounds of competitive golf.
After a very dry summer and very little rain leading up to the tournament, Andre Osterloh and his team at Mark Wiltshire Golf did a magnificent job presenting the course in pristine condition. With hard and fast fairways, slick greens and little wind to speak of, the scoring was going to be high.
After the festivities of registration on Sunday night, the tournament officially teed off at 6:52 on Monday morning. It was freezing (by coastal standards), but for everybody not from here it seemed relatively mild. After day 1, 4 teams were separated by just 2 points, leading the day by 1 point were Tony Hudson and Glynn Sinclair.
Day 2 the sun shone again, this time with a mild north-easterly wind and a lot more warmth. That wind typically makes the course tougher, as 3 of the 4 par 5’s play into the wind, making scoring that much trickier. At the end of Tuesday, 5 teams were separated by 4 points, and leading the way were father/son duo George and Dillan Farndell. George and Dillan always tee off first in the morning field, sometimes even before the starters get to the tees. This time it paid off, as they beat a lot of the wind, managed to post 47 points and lead the classic by 3 points.
After a much-needed break day on Wednesday, the tournament kicked off again on Thursday, Day 3. A colder day with a gusting south-wester greeted the players, making holes 1-4 a test of determination and character. George and Dillan consolidated their lead, continuing with their great form and extending their lead in the classic to 6 points going into the final day.
The week had flashed by, and before we knew it the final day arrived. With a cold front rolling in, the blue skies and sunshine had disappeared. A cool breeze from the south and grey skies met the players. As the players streamed in after 4 well-fought days, the scoring was tight and competition for overall places was fierce. But none more so than the top 2, who had distanced themselves from the rest of the field. George and Dillan shot a well-fought 42 points, bringing their final tally to 174 points. Last year’s winners, Ig and Morne Erasmus, who started the day 6 shots back, fired a final round of 49 points to beat the Farndells by a single point and successfully defend their trophy. Well played Ig and Morne!
